If you've followed the journey of this musical, you may know that its seeds were planted many years ago when I landed a job as a teacher at the American School for the Deaf. Those experiences of gaining fluency in ASL, and being steeped in Deaf culture directly influenced my picture book "SECRET SIGNS along the Underground Railroad," which features a clever Deaf child protagonist. Later on, a commission by National Theatre of the Deaf to transpose my picture book "Beware the Brindlebeast" into a play that would be performed across the country during NTD's 40th Anniversary season blossomed into BRINDLEBEAST the musical, later retitled HEAR ME. This film by NBC Nightly News delves into Deaf culture, and provides a glimpse into how and why HEAR ME is so relevant--and ground-breaking.
