MoMo Holt to direct HEAR ME!

We're thrilled to welcome Monique "MoMo" Holt to our creative team as DIRECTOR of HEAR ME!! MoMo will be inviting additional Deaf creatives in the coming weeks to join the team in the capacities of Assistant Director, Director of ASL, and Choreographer.


As a dancer, actor, translator, and director, MoMo brings lots of experience to the table. Check out her bio below--and leave her a WELCOME message, if you like!

Monique "MoMo" Holt is a Korean-born, Deaf performer, director, and storyteller with an extensive resume that spans 37 years.


As a dancer, she has studied with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. She worked with National Dance Institute, run by Jacques d'Amboise. She helped Ms. Erhlich found a Deaf dance company: American Theatre Dance of the Deaf.


She has a long list of acting credits. Most recently, she played Queen in Cymbeline with Scarlette Kim, Eric Ting, Nataki Garrett, Ruth Tang, Tara Ahmadinejad, Myra Su, and Jaerin Son for Quills Fest - Oct. 2022 (Oregon Shakespeare Festival); Alter-Ego of Carla and Astrid in I Was Most Alive With You with Craig Lucas (Huntington Theatre Company); Cordelia in King Lear with Michael Kahn (Shakespeare Theatre Company); Ophelia in Hamlet (Village Repertory); Girl in Ash Wednesday with Ryszard Cieślak (Studio 3); Kate in Taming of the Shrew with Bill Cain (Washington Square Players). She will be Duchess of York in Richard III with Robert O'Hara (The Public Theater/NY FREE Shakespeare for ALL) in July 2022.


MoMo has worked as Director of Artistic Sign Language (Dramaturg/Translator/Coach) for countless theatrical productions, among them: A Hound on the Hill (Russian and French Sign Languages) for Ben Stamper Film Production -New York and France; Big River (DeafWest/Ford Theatre); Clybourne Park (Woolly Mammoth Theatre). The Odyssey, Into the Woods, Cymbeline, The Heart of Robin Hood. (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), and others.


Her directing credits include TITUS in Visual Gestural Communication (New York Deaf Theatre); Cloud 9 and Urinetown, the Musical (Gallaudet University);

Caucasian Chalk Circle (Open Circle Theatre), and others.


She performed her first opera El Amor Brujo with Jim B. Nicola in NYC. Paradox, with music by Larry Polansky, Daniel Goode, Dan King, and Randall-Chaves-Camacho for Real-Time Opera at Oberlin, OH. Monique is currently creating a new opera for Inside Out Theatre and re:Naissance Opera, titled Caustic Effect, an ASL opera. Monique will direct its premiere at re:Naissance Opera in Vancouver, BC.


MoMo is an Assistant Professor at Gallaudet University in Washington DC. She has presented her lecture, "Translating Shakespearean Text into Artistic Sign Language," for universities and Shakespeare events in California; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts; Maryland; New Hampshire; New York, Ohio, Virginia, Iceland, and South Korea.


Monique Holt received a BFA in Acting from NYU and MFA in Devising Theater from Towson University. She is a member of AEA, SAG, and AFTRA
